Apply for a professional driving school license
What you need
To get a driving school license, you need to:
- Review Professional Driving School Certification page for guidelines and requirements
- Applicants must send a request for information on this process to rmvdrivingschools@dot.state.ma.us
- Receive approval from the RMV's Professional Driving School Unit
- Complete a driving school license application.
- Pay all fees, see our schedule of fees for more details.
- Submit written proof of insurance.
- Provide a performance bond.
Renew your professional driving school license
If your professional driving school license has expired, you must renew it.
What you need

Apply for a professional driving school instructor license
Learn how to become certified as a professional driving school instructor.
What you need
To be certified as a professional driving school instructor, you:
- Must complete an online application.
- Will be subject to a criminal record check.
- Will be subject to a driving record check.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and have at least 24 months operating experience (in the same license classification).
- Experienced gained under a learner's permit does not qualify toward the 24 months.
- If you were issued a standard Class D license after July 1, 2023, you will need to provide proof of lawful presence
